Color visibility:
What you see in the cartridge or on paper is wet sealant. After curing, the color may become darker or lighter. Customers need to confirm whether the final color matches tiles, glass, or stone.
Surface appearance:
Some cured samples have a glossy finish, while others are matte; some show high shrinkage and uneven surfaces. Customers want to see the actual texture after curing.
Shrinkage and density:
High-quality sealant shows almost no shrinkage after curing, with a dense and smooth surface free of bubbles. Inferior sealant may shrink or crack.
For example:
Hardness and elasticity requirements:
Too soft: The sealant may collapse, has poor wear resistance, and is not suitable for load-bearing or structural applications.
Too hard: The sealant loses flexibility, and cracks may appear due to temperature changes or building movements.
Typical range: Structural sealants can reach 40–60, while sanitary or window/door sealants are usually in the 25–45 rang.
Elasticity (Elongation/Recovery)
It should have sufficient elongation (>200% or even 400%), so that when the substrate undergoes thermal expansion, contraction, or slight movement, it will not detach.
Elasticity also determines the sealing performance (preventing gaps from forming due to displacement).
In all, When selecting silicone sealant, if you have a cured sample in hand, be sure to stretch squeeze it, and pinch it yourself. A good sealant shows three key traits: no shrinkage, quick rebound when pulled, and strong toughness when pressed.
